The name
comes from the Dakota Indian language and means first born
son. You may know Chaska, however, as the site of the
world-class
Hazeltine National Golf Club, scene of the 1991 U.S.
Open Golf Championship and the 2002 PGA Championship.
Population doubled in the 70's but the city would like "to
keep it small," as in small town rather than the
50,000-person variety. Population at present is around
15,000. The city fathers do, on the other hand, encourage
business growth and there is already a fair-sized
industrial park on the outskirts of town. This is seen as
broadening the tax base, providing jobs and making
possible the purchase of such amenities as the new $13
million community center. Average home price is around
$155,000 plus.
