Hastings is
on the Mississippi and the river is the major recreational
focus in the city. You can put a boat in at two of the
local parks that have public boat ramps. It was that
natural port and all the good farm land onshore that
caused Hastings to become a settlement in the first place.
Located some 20 miles south-southeast of St. Paul, the
city's name is the middle name of Minnesota's first
governor, Henry Hastings Sibley.
He was one of four settlers
to arrive in the mid 1800's at what was then called
Oliver's Grove, a small army post. Lt. Oliver only stopped
there in 1819 to guard a load of supplies for the winter,
because the supply boat hauling them to Fort Snelling got
stopped by a low water mark on the Mississippi. Strange
how these places get started! When Hastings officially
became a city in 1857, it had 200 more inhabitants than
St. Paul, a grand total of 1,918 people.
Population of Hastings
today is over 16,000 and the average price of homes is
around $166,000. Median household income is at about
$30,000/yr.
