Just to the
northeast of St. Paul, Maplewood has been the scene of
much of the new home construction in Twin Cities. It
boasts a major regional shopping locus, the Maplewood Mall
and is a highly accessible city with several major
thoroughfares intersecting it, including: Interstate
Highways 494/694, 94, 35E as well as Highways 36 and 61.
There is quite a variety of
housing in Maplewood due to the constant growth of the
city in the post-World War II era. Current new home
building tends to be fancier and more expensive. The
average home price is around $120,000 and median household
income is around $38,000/yr. Condos and townhomes comprise
about a third of the city's housing. Most of these were
built in the 70's and the demand for them seems to be
waning here. City population is currently about 33,000.
There are two regional
parks in the city -- Battle Creek and Keller -- and the
city's leaders have decided to leave about one-third of
the city's acreage open for parks, wetlands and
recreational space.
Maplewood is also
headquarters for the 3M company, one of a dozen Fortune
500 companies in the Twin Cities, and an employer of
12,000. |
