Ten miles
northeast of St. Paul takes its name from one of the best
lakes in the Twin Cities for recreation. White Bear Lake
is just behind the city to the north and used to be a
prime tourist spot in the old days for people traveling
from St. Paul by train. That was when the folks of what is
now White Bear Lake, the bedroom community, were farmers
growing produce for the Twin City urbanites.
Average home prices in White
Bear Lake today are around $115,000 and the median income
around $40,000. Some of the mansions from
turn-of-the-century times built on the lakeside are still
there and just as elegant as those still standing in the
Cities. Not only mansions, but those old cottages and
cabins are still around too.
In fact, you'll hear that
about White Bear Lake -- that it has an eccentric blend of
housing styles, from the million dollar and up homes on
Manitou Island to the less than $100,000 homes right
nearby. Then you'll notice that the old resort town area
near the lake, including the downtown, is done in the
traditional mode with its fancy lamp posts, neatly
rectangular blocks and old-fashioned look. While the
southern side of the city went '60's suburbanite with
split-level ranch-style homes and ramblers complete with
modern neighborhood cul-de-sacs and curves.
White Bear Lake offers two
places to put in your boat and five beaches open to the
public. For continuing education, there is Century College
and Northeast Metro Technical College. If you happen to be
a thespian, the local Lakeshore Players is the oldest
year-round community theater in Minnesota. |
