Twin Cities Townhome MLS Listings

Whether you call them townhouses or townhomes, these popular variations on the condominium concept are very popular in Minnesota. From brand-new families to retirees, townhouses are a great alternative to the traditional single-family home. Like condominiums, buying a townhouse gives you deeded ownership of your home. You own the interior of your home, while ownership of the buildings and land of the development is shared with all the other owners of the association. A homeowners’ association assesses dues, which cover all exterior and landscaping maintenance, including driveways and snow removal. You just relax in your own home, with none of the hard work single-family homeowners have to do.

The main difference between the typical townhouse and a condominium is how the individual properties are built. Instead of an apartment-like condominium, almost all townhouses have a separate outside entrance. In many cases, your townhouse may have an attached garage and a small yard. Townhouses are grouped together, sometimes with just two homes built as a unit, and sometimes as rows or clusters of homes. It all depends on the layout of your development. Often, townhouse developments include amenities like swimming pools, playgrounds, recreation areas, and community buildings. All are available to every owner of the development.

The homeowner’s association for a townhouse development elects a board of directors, which is responsible for collection of the regular dues or assessment from all individual owners. They manage the hiring of contractors to handle all maintenance chores and typically issue a newsletter informing owners of their activities. They also establish rules for the development, which may include parking rules, exterior appearance of the townhomes, and other rules designed to maintain the appearance, character and value of the entire development. Any owner can run for a seat on this board. For some, all those rules are a negative thing, but for most townhouse owners, the rules mean that their little neighborhood is safe and quiet and helps retain the value of their investment.
